Ask Jeff
Georg Lacy, Nashville, TN
- Q:Hi Jeff! How have you done your stamp guitar? What glue do you have used for the stamps? Have you used some finish after adding the stamps?A:Hi Georg, the stamps already had glue on the back so I used a sponge to moisten them and they were dried I applied lacquer with a paint brush. It's a lot of work but it was fun. It took about 6 hours just to do the stamps because you have to strategically place them on the guitar.

Cody Maxilom, Lancaster, CA
- Q:Hello Jeff, How can I collaborate with you or either Sheryl Crow? I have 3 songs that I believe are Hits on singles or part Albums. They are not published but copyrighted. The names are Billboard Baby (American Raggae), Feather my Nest (ballad) and New Day (pop), I ve been an admirer of Sheryl Crow and was inspired by her when she came up here to the Antelope Valley to do her video shoot. I'm as you can see am trying to get into the industry, and been sitting on these for a long time, and belive they have the key necessities to make it to the top.. I play drums, Guitar and Bass and also a prolific writer. These song are written from my life experience and would go great with her repertoire. I know you get a million of these letters I just hope this one somehow makes it thru Cody Maxilom 661-878-1782, Im not a hobo hanging around looking for fast buck, I sell Real Estate. www.codymax.com Thanks if you read this all the way.A:Hi Cody, I would recommend finding a new artist that could use these songs. Right now, I'm not looking for collaborators. In fact, I'm trying to get back into doing my own stuff for a while. Sheryl has just finished recording enough material for 2 or 3 records so I know she's not looking for songs. Like I said, find someone new and make them a star.
Billy Keller, Newburgh, NY
- Q:An Autograph picture Dear Jeff Trott YOu are a great Guitarist. Love the song Lonely No More by Rob Thomas. Could I get an Autograph picture of you. i live at 38 Richman Ave. Newburgh, NY 12550. Your fan Billy keller.
A:Thanks for the props! I would love to send you an autographed photo if I had a press photo. I'll see what I can do.
Keith , Granite Bay, CA
- Q:Jeff, Ha! No pet name..it was taken from the Kink's song Lola.On a different note, do you ever use any Mesa Boogie equip when you record? I have an old .22 caliber, tube of course. Great tone. Do you typically mic your amps when recording or some other method. Along with great riffs it sounds like you spend a great deal of effort getting unique tones. Thanks for responding. Later, KeithA:Hi Keith, I have never used Mesa Boogie mainly because I've always been a fan of Vox and Fender amps. As far as recording, I use a 421 and sometimes use a Royer ribbon mic. Api mic pre's and blackface 1176 as far as my front end.Recently I've been using Chandler mic pre's...the Emi style which sound a bit like API. I hope this helps.
Eric Robinson, Santa Monica, CA
- Q:Hi Jeff- Checked out your site, very cool. I didn't know you were from SF; I grew up in Palo Alto. Anywho, I'm a producer/engineer/mixer/musician/songwriter and I have a studio up in Santa Monica. It's a cool little spot; we have a Neve, RADAR, Monkey Tools, etc. I have had this space for about a year now, before that I was an assistant at Royaltone (before Linda Perry bought the place) and then in NYC at Theater 99 and Phish's Barn in Vermont. You seem to be one of the few guys in LA who is doing the same kind of thing I want to be doing. I'm also a multinstrumentalist (drums, keys, bass, guitar, lap steel, mandolin, banjo, etc.) How is your studio set up down in Manhattan? For example, is it residential, do you track drums there, did you bring in a designer? Also, as a songwriter, do you charge for writing sessions at your studio, or by the song, or how? Any information you are willing to share is greatly appreciated. I totally understand your need to keep some information private. Perhaps you could send me an email back instead of posting a response. Thanks for your time. -Eric RobinsonA:Hi Eric, my studio is set up mostly for writing. I have a few good mic's and mic pre's, comp. Usually I use Stylus RMX or Battery for programming. I have a wurly, B3 , Virus Indigo and tons of soft synth's in my G4 laptop which is set up with protools. For my main recording gear I have the latest protools hd-3 accel and record at 96k. If the demos turn into masters, I usually add live drums which I record at Sage and Sound Studios. I don't charge for making demos but my manager selects my projects. Usually writing leads to recording then producing . I hope this helps.
Stephen Trott, Amityville, NY
- Q:Hey Jeff, Do your anscestor's come from Massachusetts? Very Nice Guitar work! Peace, SteveA:As Johnny Carson used to say, "I didn't know that." Thanks.
Che Ballard, king's Lynn, UK
- Q:Hello, I'm a big fan of Wire Train and knowing that the 'Electric' is out there and I don't have a copy is a depressing thought. Any chance of a copy? I'll even pay the postage costs, how geneous is that?A:Hi Che, "Electric" is just a version of "Snug" which is the last record Wire Train ever recorded. Unfortunately it was never released. I can't send you a copy because the guys in Wire Train could potentially release it. If we dod release this in the future, I promise to give you a free copy. I hope this is cool with you.
Bernardo Charca, Venice Beach
- Q:Jeff, It's Bernardo Charca. The architect that bid to design your house many months ago. I'm just following up as I normally to do see how you're doing, and if you've begun constructioon. I'e been designing and building, including an amazing treehouse in Brentwood and a new spec house for myself in Venice, I'm sure you'll love. Drop me a line, or a call. I'd love to see you socially. Bernardo 310 612 5541A:I will get in touch. Thanks Bernardo.
Crista Gallagher, Atlanta, Georgia
- Q:I saw Jen Foster in Atlanta. Is the song "Taking Bob Dylan" on the cd that you produced? When is it coming out?A:Yes it is! Jen is putting out an EP first containing "Taking Bob Dylan" and "The Underdogs". I'm not sure when the full length CD is being released but hopefully sometime this year.
Patricia Chizek, Pensacola, Florida
- Q:August 10, 2005 I am probably not writing the correct department but I need help!! The Habitat for Humanity is throwing a major car show in Pensacola, Florida August 20th this year. I know it is only ten days away but we need help. We have been advertising for months for the battle of the bands and only have about three bands at this time to play. We had around eleven but with the two hurricanes we had over the last eight months a lot of people lost their equipment and had to drop out. I am with the car club that will help judge the show and I told them I would try my best to help out. I do not know what else to do and I know this is short notice, but if there is anyway possible that anyone there could help me get at least a group or two to come and play it would be awesome and we really need the support right now. Habitat for Humanity has been rebuilding homes for people that have been affected by the two storms and really need any support they can get. If that can't happen maybe some cd's to raffle off. Anything would help at this time. Thank you so much for any help that can be provided!!!!! Patricia Chizek Under Construction Customs 850-221-3903 Or Jim Cruz JC Marketing Under Construction Customs 850-221-3196 850-455-0200A:Hi Patricia, this sounds like a very noble thing to do. I wish I could help you out but I don't know any bands that are in your area. In order for a band to play from out of state it would require travel, crew and equipment. It probably costs more than you think. Maybe you could hire a cool DJ to do this. It might be more cost effective but I don't know the details. Is there a budget? What kind of bands? Is there a sound system? who is putting it on? Where exacly is it being held?...Many questions.I hope this helps. It may be too hard to pull off at such short notice unless money is no object.
Mandi Rae Trott, Birmingham, Al
- Q:I share your last name!! I am a songwriter/guitar player/banjo player/singer in Birmingham Alabama and I was wondering if you would go take a look at my music and tell me what you think... after all, we might just be related! hahaha. www.mandiraemusic.com How did you get started in the business??A:Hi Mandi Rae. Trott is not an uncommon name in England but I've only met a few other Trott's that weren't related to my family directly. My grand father came from Battle, England via Canada. To answer your question about how I got in the music business, I started playing in bands in which eventually lead to my first full time band Wire Train who were signed to CBS Sony. After the end of Wire Train I continued doing session work and writing songs. Check out my bio which gives a little more detail.
Paul Phillips, Essex, England
- Q:Hey Jeff, good to see your doing well and still making great music. With so many people asking you about Wire Train, how 'bout adding a link to my site http://www.wiretrain.co.uk on your links page ? . Many thanks dude, take care....A:Consider it done! THX
Ryan McLeod, Chapel Hill, NC
- Q:Hi Jeff, You rock, as I'm sure you know. Did you play on this new SC record, or just do writing and some production? Specifically which songs? Any chance you'll get out to play with Crow any time soon? We miss you on those tours, and we're all worried about the Shanks influence.A:Thanks for giving a shit. Yes I played a bunch on the new record. I co-wrote and co-produced "Good Is Good", "Where Has All The Love Gone", "Live It Up" (which is my pick for a single), "Lifetimes","Chances Are", "Letter To God" (which is a personal fave) and "I Don't Want to Know". Sheryl has asked me to sit in on some shows, which I would totally love to do but that was as far as it went. I'm going to her record release party in New York so perhaps I'll bring it up again. There are going to be shows with orchestra and Beck's father, David Campbell is going to be conducting. Those should be some amazing shows.
Vincent Plunkett, Long Beach CA
- Q:Hey Jeff, This one's not for the Q&A and frankly, no reply is necessary. You and I have some mutual aquantences in Portland, Steve Lockwood, Brent Wick. I haven't seen those guys for years since moving to L.A. , Do you still see them? Anyhow, I am on business in Philly and saw a young group of guys play at a bar last night, there name is "Roselind", They may even still be in High School? These guys really blew me away with there musical and lyrical maturity. Check them out when you have time. They gave me some website address that they promised will be operating soon. Cheers, Vince Plunkett www.roselind.com www.roselindmusic.com www.myspace.com/roselindA:I live in Manhattan Beach now so I don't see Steve Lockwood anymore. I'll check out this website
Marilyn Choo, Kent, UK
- Q:Hi Jeff, This is not so much a qustion, but just to let you know how much, both my husband and I, appreciate your work on Sheryl Crow's new album, Wildflower. 'Letter to God' is also my favourite and I particularly love the guitar work on this track. Can you tell me how this was achieved? BTW - I cannot play - all I know is that I love the sound, especially the intro!A:Hi Marilyn, thanks for the compliments. "Letter To God" is also one of my favorite tracks too. I got that guitar sound by putting a couple of mics down the hallway of a warehouse we were recording at in Austin Texas. It was at a small work studio called Melody Lane. We had a great time recording there.
Ermalyn Nielsen, Portland, OR
- Q:Hey Jeff! Was that you on Letterman 9/22 playing Good is Good with SC? Just this summer I went to a Pink Martini concert and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Now I've discovered you (courtesy Wildflower). I guess Portland (or ex-Portlander as is in your case) does have some great musical talent. I've just not caught up yet. Too busy being a Mom I guess. Hey as a side note, I ordered on Amazon.com today Sesame Steet Kids' Favorite Songs and Dig Up the Astroturf.A:Thanks Ermalyn. That wasn't me playing on Letterman but coincidentally, I went to the Pink Martini concert at the Hollywood Bowl they were great. I bought one of their awesome T-SHirts! All the best Mama!
Christian Gschneidner, Germany
- Q:Hi Jeff! I came on your homepage through the link on Sheryl Crow´s page. I still do not own a copy of one of her cds, but I often recognized how well written and produced her songs are. This is great handcrafted music. Now I just listened to your song Walk the clouds. What a great song! Interesting what fantastic, talented and unknown musicians stand beeind Crow´s songs. I immediately wanted to buy it in german i-Tunes shop but it was not available. What a pity. What a nice e-piano-sound!!! How did you get that one. Is it a vintage Wurlitzer-Piano? All the best to you!
A:Hi CHristian, I used a wurlitzer electric piano (student model) for "Walk A Cloud". By the way, you can purchase my record through my website which takes you to CD Baby. All the proceeds go to Katrina Hurricane Relief, so not only will you support my music but it goes to charity. How cool is that!
Justin Cook, Hollywood LA
- Q:Hey Jeff Big fan of your work. I manage a UK based artist and am looking to reach out to you regarding a matter. Do you have a mgt company i can contact?A:Hi Justin, if you look in the links dept of my website you'll see Nettwerk Mgt. click on that and it tells you how to contact them.
Jeff Trott, West Bridgewater, MA
- Q:Hi Jeff, I noticed a while back when I was looking at the credits on "Sheryl Crow" that you were credited with writing some of the songs. I have been a big fan of your work without even knowing that the person that wrote some of these great songs has the same name as me (not too common a name). Keep up the great work and good luck! Jeff TrottA:Wow! I wonder if we are related? There is also another Jeff Trott in the Sacramento area as well. Thanks for the kind words.BTW I'm on the other Sheryl records as well including the new one. All the best "cuz"!
Jen Goetz, Nampa, ID
- Q:Jeff, I was wondering (hoping), on behalf of my best friend, soulmate and partner, Tami Goetz, if you are coming with Sheryl to Nampa on the 18th? It will be her birthday & I she is as big of a fan of Sheryl's as she is of yours. Thank you.. JenA:I was just at Sheryl's record release party and Sherl asked my wife if I'd be interested in siting in at a show. I'd love to and might do so in Portland Oregon since I might be up there for a couple of days around that time. I think that I'm going to try to "pop in" as much as my schedule will permit. Thanks for thinking of me! Tell your friend "Happy Tami-Day!" from yours truly.
Honora Mead, Ridgefield, WA
- Q:Hello Jeff, I went out to dinner the other night with a friend of mine, Patty McCulla .I mentioned that I really liked Sheryl's new CD and that I just got in a garage band. Who knew how fun that would be? She told me to write to you. Any words of wisdom for a piano player and beginning songwriter? Good luck with everything! Honora MeadA:Best words of wisdom would be to enjoy what you're doing. For new songwriters, the key to writing is to not to worry what other people think. Most writers who first start writing lyrics are afraid to lay down the first words because they want the words to sound great. Just be bold enough to write anything down because you can always change words as you go. The main thing is just to start with anything and go from there. I hope this helps. Send Patty my love. She's an awesome person!
Georg Lacy, Nashville, TN
- Q:Hi Jeff! 1. What do you think of the new China Vox AC 30's? Did you ever testet one? Comment: The best songs on SC's new CD are the co-written songs with JT. So I ask myself why she does work with THE other producer as well. "I" don't get this. :-)A:Hi Georg. I've haven't tried the new China Vox AC-30. Are they good? Thanks for the nice compliment on the new Sheryl record. As far as why she works with John Shanks, it's a mystery to me. Could be she's looking for change. He's a very talented guy but his approach is very safe. You should probably write to her website about this. Anyway, thanks for writing.
Gunter Jenny (Mr.)
- Q:Hi Jeff! 1. Jeff and Georg I own a brand new China Vox with 2 x blue bulldogs and I get a fantastic result when I record with the new "Voxy Lady" which is rather square than foxy. :-) A bit more mids (which is intended) than the old ones but still very vintage sounding. I'm very happy to have a new „reliable“ Class A Vox. The only thing I have to criticize is the slightly shuffling vibrato. Some nice pics here: http://www.fendermail.com/amps.html 2. I second Georg regarding the other producer! I mean of course it’s not all about guitar solo’s but where is the phrasing in e.g. SC’s „I Know Why“ guitar solo? For me it’s just a chunk by chunk wishy-washy solo. No musical bow at all and for me a lack of melodic approach compared to the musical slides by Jeff Trott. Getting a grammy means nothing to me. I mean Eminem won a music Oscar! Sheryl should do the whole record with Jeff Trott. I posted this on Sheryl’s forum some time ago. (Username: Gunter2005) 3. Jeff would you be so nice to explain what guitar, amp, fx you have used for the song „Lifetimes“? I mean the theme beside the Wurli at the beginning? Awesome song!!! My fav songs are: Good is Good, Lifetimes & Where has all the love gone. Congrats Jeff! :-)A:Thanks for the report on the New China Vox AC-30. I'm going to have to check it out. As far as the guitar, amp and fx for "Lifetimes" I used "Stampede", (1973 Gibson Les Paul with the stamps) ampwise my 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb and a little bit of vibrato from the amp. That's pretty much it. Thanks again for the kind words.
Chuck Davis, Squarefield CA
- Q:Who is the best singer you have played with, that has yet to become famous? Just fishin'. Congrats on all your success. The first time I saw you on SNL, I was so happy for you. And things just got bigger and better from there. Wow, and I heard nice guys.... Anyway, just wanted to say what a fan I am. When are you playing in SF again? Say Hey to the Wire Train boys for me. As for me, all is swell in Squarefield. Always remember... You were Rocking with Vultures, long before you were Soaring with the Crow. Thanks for the music. Past, present, and future.A:Great to hear from you! Do you have any Lawn Vulture recordings? I think we recorded "American Woman" waaay before Lenny Kravitz did and waay better! Stay in touch Chuck!
Bob Peek, Belmont, CA
- Q:Jeff, just picked up "wildflower". you are writing your ass off bro! loved every line, but especially, "chances are" bob peekA:Thanks for the kind words Bob!
Brett Marlow, St. Petersburg, FL
- Q:Hey Jeff - Did you ever get a chance to sit in at the Portland show Sheryl did a few weeks back? If not, you seriously need to! The fans would LOVE it!A:I was supposed to go to Portland and my plans had to change due to an illness in the family. I think the invitation to play is opened to me. Right now she is doing a few shows with orchestra which is a huge responibility on her part. Once she kicks in with the regular part of her touring, I'm going to try to make a few appearances when I can. I feel like I'm missing playing all those songs that I've created with her. Not being a part of her live band is very strange but on the other hand it has allowed me the time to make other records. I would love to see her fans again.
Betty Coleman (Phillips), Fort Irwin, CA
- Q:Hi Jeff, I am happy to hear you are doing well. Will you or Wire Train be playing anytime soon down my way. It has been along time since I have seen you all. I still take pictures and make candy occasionally. Do you still have the golden pick. I hope to hear from you, Take Care and Good Luck with everything you are doing.A:Hi Betty. Nice to hear from you. I wish I could say Wire Train is playing somewhere soon. A couple of years ago we did a reunion show at the Whiskey in Hollywood. VH-1 filmed it and it was supposed to be in a show about old bands reuniting. It turns out that the host of our segment got fired so unfortunately they never aired our show. I think Kevin has footage of this and perhaps one day he will release it on a Wire Train website. All the best.
Ueli Frey, Switzerland
- Q:Hi Jeff, did you ever receive the Wire Train DVD that I sent you? I mailed it a month ago to the netwerk agancy, on your behalf. Best regards, UF.A:Yes Ueli, I did receive the Wire Train dvd and cd, thank you very much. I really enjoyed seeing my friends in the old days and remembering the great times we had. I'm sorry I missed you while you were out here. I've been working non stop on a new project. Keep in touch!
Perry Thoorsell, Mountain View, CA
- Q:Hi Jeff, remember me? We were rival guitarists at Carlmont High School. I have stayed with music as a bassist and am active in the SF Bay Area. I'm happy for your success.A:Hi Perry nice to hear from you. I do remember you of course but I don't remember being a rival guitarist. I was just having fun playing with my buddies in high school. I am pleased that you are still playing. You were always quite excellent at everything you did. Thanks for taking the time to remember me.
Ewan George, London, UK
- Q:Hello Jeff, May I ask what pedals you have on your board?A:Hi Ewan, I've got a trunk full of old an new pedals. I'm a huge fan of the Memory Man, Red Snapper, Big Muff (the russian one) Dynacomp, Rotovibe, Vox Wah, assorted distortion boxes but I prefer turning up an amp more than using pedals for distortion. I have an old 55' Fender Tweed Deluxe (Neil Young fave). I hope this helps.
Tim Galles, Albuquerque, New Mexico
- Q:Hey Jeff, I have the most vivid memories of you playing with World Party in New York in 1990. Goodbye Jumbo was such a cool album. What was that experience like? How did you and Karl get along? Thanks.A:Hi Tim. You know, playing in World Party was such a great experience. Karl and I were really great friends. It was one of my favorite musical endeavors. I still get great reactions from people I meet who find out that I was in the band and at such a peak period of time. I really wish they had become more succesful because the talent was huge. Karl is my favorite writer, teamed with Guy Chambers who has gone on to producing chart topping acts, Chris Sharrock who was like the new Ringo. A couple of years ago Karl came out for a visit and we played some music. There was still the chemistry we had but we had a falling out over a few old issues. It is such a pity because I was hoping for a reunion of a sort.
Wendy Paula Moesdyk, Victoria, B.C.

I would love to do more work with Aimee Mann. She is one of my all time favorites. As far as Sheryl playing South Africa, I'll put in a good word for you.

Tori Horgan, SA, Australia
- Q:Hi Jeff, I am currently composing and recording my demo album, produced by Daniel Jones (Savage Garden). I'm Tori, a 15-year-old Australian singer/songwriter (based in Adelaide) who has for the past 6 years performed in musical theatre, appeared on several television commercials and performed as a feature artist at many major events around Australia. In June 2005 I had a showcase at Sony/BMG Australia and due to my age, was advised by Denis Handlin to embark on a songwriting program and to revisit Sony/BMG in 8-12 months time. This year I have been working with Daniel Jones at his home studio in Brisbane recording several songs sourced from songwriters around the world. Amongst these were songs written by Matthew Gerrard, Robbie Nevil and Kara DioGuardi. However, my aim over the next 6 months is to focus on song collaboration. I am totally passionate and dedicated to my career and would be honoured to work with writers like yourself, who have had immense experience in the music/entertainment industry. Following recent discussions with my manager Mark Klemens (Profile Talent Management) and Daniel Jones, I'll be in LA working with various writers from April 16th - May 14th. Obviously being based in Australia, it's not every day I get the chance to travel overseas to write so I really want to make the most of the opportunity. I understand that you would have a lot of other committments but if by any chance you've got some spare time between these dates - I'd love to take up the opportunity to write with you. For more information on my background and previous experience, please visit my website: www.tori.com.au To listen to some tracks I've recorded with Daniel/co-wrriten, please visit: www.tori.com.au/musicvideo.htm UserID: torimusic Password: torimeridien Please let me know if this doesn't work and I'll email through to you some mp3s. Thank you! Hope to hear from you soon. Oh..please don't post this message on your website! :-) Thanks! ToriA:Just to remind you that this part of my website is called Fan Q and A or Question and Answer. It's not a bulletin board for peoples bio's. Maybe when I redo my website I'll have a page for this sort of thing. In the mean time let's keep it specifically to asking me questions. Thanks.
Jack Reid, San Antonio, TX
- Q:Jeff--I just caught wind of the elliott smith tribute album and got it. While several of the tracks are good, your version of "wouldn't mama be proud" kills them all. IMHO, your track is the only one on the CD that actually transcends the original tune--I never would have thought to back off on the tempo like that. Did you program the percussion? What program/equipment did you use for the backing tracks? On an unrelated note, what am I supposed to use to stream your music? I'd like to hear some stuff you wrote--though I'm sure I already have and didn't know it.A:Thank you Jack! It's nice to hear. I did this track with a couple of friends of mine, Justin Meldal Johnsen (Beck's bassist) John O'Brien and Keith Schreiner. This was an incredibly fun track to do.As far as programming I did some, Justin did some as well as John and Keith. I did a little synth work. As far as my music there is hi and lo fi to choose from.

- Q:Hi Jeff! I was just curious about Alain Comeau. Where can I get a taste of his music. He was compared to Elton John and I would like to judge for myself!!A:I guess you could do a search on the internet. I don't actually know if he has a record out. I worked on a couple of his songs a while back but that was a while ago. As far as his similarity to Elton John, Alain has a much higher voice, musically he sounds a bit like early Elton.
Susan Giorgetti, Scottsdale, Arizona
- Q:What is Sheryl's Crow's birthdate?A:Sheryl's birthday is Feb. 27th?...I always screw this up but I think it's around there.
Peter Mushoff, Germany
- Q:Hello Jeff, I am a medican member of a group from Germany and I have a pleasure. Is it possible that i send you a message for miss Sheryl Crow? I don`t know the right way to send her an important information in trust the message will arrive. It is an important message against cancer. No joke no fake. It would be nice if you (we) could help her. with best regards, PeterA:Sorry Peter, I'm not a messenger for Sheryl Crow. If you want to reach her try her website.
Barb Weir, St. Louis, Missouri
- Q:How can I email your friend Sheryl. My friend Ryan was in her class when she was a teacher. I also have had breast cancer and wanted to tell her about a new radiation here in St. Louis that instead of being 6 weeks which I had and I also had the calcification that was cancerous, there is a new radiation that can be done in 5 days. I know you are a friend of hers and it would be well worth it for her to check out these doctors. They are the best and well recognized around the world as top breast surgeons. BarbA:Since the nature of this letter could be helpful to Sheryl, I'll pass this on. I don't normally act as a liaison to Sheryl for privacy reasons which is why I tell people trying to reach her through me to go to her website. BTW, she is doing extremely well and is being taken care of by a top notch physician.
Bill Archer, Shelton, WA
- Q:Hello Jeff. I teach enrichment at an elementary school. The music teacher & I came up with the idea of the school choir singing "Soak up the Sun" at an assembly to promote reading. We've adjusted the lyrics a bit...(I'm going to soak up some words, etc.)We're hoping you're okay with this and that we could get permission for a public performance. We don't won't to break any copyright laws! Also, it would be great to be able to videotape the performance and make copies available (not to sell) to parents. Thanks!A:Hi Bill. Thanks for writing to me. I'm cool with the change as long as you don't change the line "My friend the communist". The reason is this; a while ago I was contacted by the director of a school choir that wanted to change that line because they didn't want their kids to sing the word "communist". I was really surprised to hear this. When I went to school they taught me about all the different forms of governments. Reading about this didn't turn me into a dictator or a king. I'm all for your kids "Soaking up some words". I'm sure your request is as you've stated. Please make sure you contact Warner Chappell Music Publishing who represent Sheryl for her approval. Thanks!

- Q:Hello Jeff. I know this is a round-a-bout way to reach Sheryl Crow but I thought you might be able to help. We would love Sheryl's assistance in helping us reach our goal of raising $1,000,000 for breast cancer research and awareness. I formed Team Colorado 2 years ago to walk in the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day with the goal of a 10 person team and raising $20,000. Thus far, we have raised over $135,000 and hope to raise another $135,000 this year. We would like to "challenge" 9 other states to form their own Team "Colorado" so that we can together raise over $1,000,000 for breast cancer research and awareness. We would love Sheryl to be our spokesperson. We would greatly appreciate if you could forward this to her. She is a wonderful role model and we hope we have the opportunity to work with her. I hope you can help. Thanks. Risa
A:I'm getting flood by tons of people trying to reach Sheryl through me. I'm afraid I can't help you. Please try her website.

- Q:Greetings Jeff. I've been a fan since the Wire Train days. I see you are working with Louise Goffin-Wells. Did you both play with Tears for Fears, though different tours? BTW, no relation to Brian, even though we have met.A:Louise is an old friend of mine going all the way back to the early 90's. Her mother is songwriting legend Carol King. We both did tours with TFF. I had recommend Louise to take my spot as guitarist and background vocalist.

- Q:Hello Jeff, I just came across your music while buying coffee at Starbucks the other day (I realize that I just ruined my street cred with the opening sentence!) and went straight to the music store to pick up 'Dig up the Astroturf' (further ruining my street cred as I actually bought a physical disk!). It's tremendous stuff - thank you. I am a guitarist in the sense that I have a guitar and try to play but I suffer from an astonishing lack of dexterity and talent; coupled with remarkable level of tone deafness and lack of rhythum . As a result, my play is relegated to personal amuzement well out of the earshot of friends, family and small animals. My question for you is if there is anywhere I can go to buy the sheet music for your album - I have been trying to figure out how to play 'The Few That Remain' but have been scuppered by my general crapness. Thank you very much for any advice you can give me. All the best, Mike.A:Hi Michael-you know, who really cares about "street cred". I get coffee at Starbucks as well as a bunch of other places. As long as its strong and hot! Anyway, I don't have sheet music for my record but I can give you the tuning I used for "The Few That Remain"....it's CGCGCC plus I might have sped up the original track which might have been in the key of B, so just use that same tuning a half step lower. I hope that helps. Thanks for the kind words.

- Q:Hi Jeff, really enjoy your playing. The band i'm in have just signed a major label deal and are heading into the studio to record our debut. Do you have any advice on guitar gear to use for the sessions? Would you suggest using a smaller amp (champ etc) to get a bigger tone? I've been using the DR z amps which are great but with a 4x12 it's seems hard to nail the tone without distant mic'ing it and even then the tone is not as i hear it when playing. Any advice on an acoustic that you've found good for putting on tape? Thought about a j-45 or hummingbird? Keep up the good work! Greg.A:Hi Greg- I think going with small amps in the studio is the way to go. If you think of a mic as an ear drum it might help. A lot of big sounding records used small amps> Led Zeppelin's first few records used small amps. AC/DC uses small amp. Anyway, if you can find a Marshall 15 studio amp you will be really happy. It's a small amp with a big crunchy sound. Acoustics J-45 is good but look into Martin D-18. They record soooo well. Hope this helps.

- Q:hey jeff, how are you? I was wondering when we will get a chance to listent to some of your new songs. how is going your own record ? just wondering... tc, carolineA:I'm almost there. Thanks for asking!
Claudia Villanueva, Chicago, IL
- Q:Hey, Jeff... Just wanted to say how much I love your work. I sill listen to your album once a week (since '01). I love, love, love it! I've been a fan of Sheryl's since the beginning, so I was so happy to see you had an album, too! More of a question (I'm getting there) it's a request: Please use the Wurlitzer!!! I love, love, love "lifetimes" on WILDFLOWER! Is it Sheryl and yours preferred "writing" piano?A:Hey Claudia Thank you so much for the kind words. "Lifetimes" started out an acoustic song written literally on the backporch of Sheryl's place in Austin. It came together really quickly over a couple of beers. When we went to record it, it was hard to get that "backporch" feeling so we did a slightly RnB approach using a wurly and a "Steve Cropper" guitar riff. It seemed to work nicely that way. As far as writing on piano versus wurly, we don't have any preference except that the wurly is instantly vibey. Also, it depends on where we are when we're writing...if there is a wurly around or piano.I hope this helps.

Marianne Melody, morristown, NJ
- Q:What microphone & preamps did Sherly Crow use on the Wildflower album. which studio was that album recorded in thanks alot.A:Hi Marianne - We used many different mic's and preamps. Vocally Sheryl uses a Telefunken 251 mic and sometimes an SM-7. Mic pre's. API 550 mic pre or Neve mic pre's. We used a number of studios, Sunset Sound, Sage & Sound, Henson Studios, Oceanway(Orchestra), Capitol Studios (Orchestra), Larrabee (which is now The Pass), Melody Lane in Austin. We recorded sporadically which is why we used so many different places.

- Q:Please telephone regarding a mutual friend of ours: h (276)889-4199, c 202-7979. Most important. Thank you, Joe.A:Can you give me more of a clue as to what this is about? I don't recognize your name.
Russ Caldwell, Greensboro, NC
- Q:Jeff, love your work ! My 15 yr old daughter recently turned me on to OAR and there I found a song of yours Daylight the Dog . . . cool song ! Keep up the good work; looking forward to many albums. What are your favorite electric and acoustic guitars ?A:Hi Russ- My favorite guitar is my 1973 Gibson Les Paul Custom. It has a Bigsby whammy bar and stamps all over it. My favorite acoustic is My Martin D-18 Vintage. As it ages it keeps getting better and better sounding.
Eric Dayton, Portland, OR
- Q:Hey Jeff- (I am testing the system but do have a real question) I have long loved the song Mad World and only recently found out it was a Tears for Fears song. Did you work on this song with them and would you ever consider doing a cover on a future solo release. I can hear you really ellivateing the quiet psychedelic quality of the original.A:Hi Eric- I toured with TFF in 92 or 93. I've always loved "Mad World". Another good one on that record is "Pale Shelter" it's kind of Cure/Joy Division sounding.
Jerry Donahue, Chicago, IL
- Q:My wife was a dancer in a Wire Train video shot around '87 or '88. She isn't sure which song it was for, and never saw the finished video. Are the Wire Train videos available? Thanks.A:Hi Jerry- It might have been "She Comes On" which was shot at The Hotel Utah. I don't think the videos are for sale but you might be able to get a copy online from one of the Wire Train fan clubs. There are a few out there that have virtually everything Wire Train ever did. I have copies of most everything but right now most of my stuff is in storage. I'm in the process of building a new house.
Jason Land, N. Hollywood
- Q:Jeff~ What means of inspiration keeps you motivated to continue creating music?A:There are many. Some of them not music related. Photographs, books, conversations, the arts are all good motivators. I think you have to have this uncontrollable urge to want to make music. I find that life experiences help to inspire. It is also good to give it a break from time to time. Those muses are evasive at time and only seem to appear when you are at you most innocent or most vulnerable.
- Q:Hey Jeff~ Hope all is well...I've been listening to "Wouldn't Mama Be Proud" a lot lately, I really dig it. What tuning did you record it in? Also, how did you come up with the ambient themes throughout the song? Best, Jason~A:Hey Jason- The tuning is an open C that uses C's and G's only. As far as the "ambient themes", they are a combo of different tracks from Keith Shreiner, John O'Brien and myself.
- Q:Jeff~ How's the Dada record coming along? What's been the most challenging aspect of the project so far? Also, if you hear of anyone around L.A. looking to sell a pedal steel would you please let me know? It's been a feat to find one....not exactly the country music capital. Best Jason~A:It's going very well. They are a real pleasure to work with. We've recorded 4 songs and one of them sounds like a smash hit...it's called "72 Hours". As far as the pedal steel, try EBay.
- Q:Jeff~ I was surprised to see that your working with DADA...who approached who on this? Did Mike Gurly or you start this endeavor? Will you be playing guitar on the cuts? Best~ JasonA:Jason- Dada's manager Danny Hest introduced me to the band as a potential producer for them. I met the band and we hit it off really well. We are currently recording 4 new songs. I have to say it's refreshing for me to work with a band for a change. These guys are great players and are extremely fun to hang with. As far as guitars, Mike Gurley is handling that department. So far I'm really digging this project.
- Q:Jeff~ Hope all is well.. 2 questions for you... Do you play pedal steel guitar and if so, which kind do you have? What was the biggest risk you took on the Wildflower record? Best Jason~A:Hi Jason, I do play pedal steel but I'm very limited on that instrument. I don't own one but if I think a Sho-Bud is the one to get. There are pedal steel magazines out there that probably will give you better info than what limited knowledge I have. The biggest risk on "WIldflower" was probably doing too many down tempo songs. Also doing a record incorporating string arrangements is quite a challenge. It can make a song sound pretentious. We tried strings on every album so far but usually on only one song. This record took a lot of courage to have them on most of the tracks and risk being panned by record reviewers and fans. I admire Sheryl for making a record she wanted to make. I think this is one of those records that might not be appreciated right now but will be in the future.
- Q:Jeff~ Just wanted to write and wish you a happy new year, I'm looking forward to meeting you this year.A:Thanks for the wishes. Have a peaceful and prosperous New Year!
- Q:Jeff~ The electric picking track in the pre chorus of "Good is Good" has such a cool tone...how did you get it..sounds like a leslie cab. I can't get enough of this record man....well done.A:You are correct sir! It is a 1973 Gibson Les Paul Custom through a Leslie cabinet. A classic sound. Thank you.
- Q:Jeff~ I've been waiting 3 years to hear what you and Sheryl would do next and you did not disappoint...slide playing is perfect. I have so many questions about this record but I'll start with these 2. How did you get the slide tone for "Good Is Good"? How did you get the split effect sound in the bridge of "Live it up" ..awesome chord progression in that song. What would you say your influences were going into this record, I didn't hear as much Stones in your playing as previous, seems like your focusing on different chord movements..anyway, I love it.A:Thanks for the kudos! I got the slide sound with an old Epiphone Casino and a 1955 Fender Tweed Deluxe and double tracked. The FX on "Live It Up" is a combo of PitchBlender and Echo Farm delays and some slow flanging, thanks for noticing. On that song the influnce would be World Party. As far as influences, we just tried to make music that was inspired although Beck's "Sea Change" was listened to a lot.
Kelsey McBride, Norman, OK
- Q:Hi! I adore your version of "Wouldn't Mama Be Proud" on the Elliott tribute CD. I'm a huge Elliott fan, and I was wondering what made you decide to be a part of the tribute album. Ex oh, Kelsey.A:hanks for the kind words! I was asked by the people who put the tribute record together if I'd like to do a song since I'm still considered an honorary Portlander just the same as Elliott was considered a Portlander even though he moved around. I lived there for 7 wonderful years and only just recently relocated to Southern Cal to produce and write. As far as Elliott, I've always been enchanted by his music and feel he never got the public popularity he deserved. Doing "Wouldn't Mama Be Proud" made me ache to do my own music more and I am planning to finish my second solo record sometime this year. XO
Christopher 'KrimZen' Snyder, North Hollywood
- Q:Acknowledging the varying degrees of artistry in music, Jeff- in a single sentence can you please express your position on what makes your music true for you.A:I look at making music as taking a journey to where I have no idea where I'm going to end up until I'm there.
Amy Bartelt, New York
- Q:Hi Jeff, My name is Amy and I am a big fan.You are a brilliant musician and writer. Your music is passionate and honest. I was wondering if I could possibly obtain one of your imprinted guitar picks? I would really appreciate it. Thank you for your time and effort. All the best.A:I used to have a stockpile of imprinted picks but they've seem to have disappeared. Since you've asked, I am going to have some made and I will send you some just for asking!
Wendy Moesdyk, Rocchetta Sant Antonio, Italy
- Q:hi jeff, we have spoken in the past and you gave me some good advice about song writing. still not happening, but i am moving to italy..partly thanks to you! hope you are well, drop me a line, would love to speak! wendyA:Wendy-you got to follow your bliss. Italy is a pretty amazing place. I hope you find what you're searching for.
Ron Boss, Europe
- Q:Hi Jeff! I'm a AC30/65deluxe reverb combination fan too... A) Do you mike the '65 also with a Sennheiser MD 421? B) Have you ever used a Sennheiser MD 441 (Brian May) for softer lead sound? C) Do you have tested a China AC30/Bluebulldogs already? If so please let me know what do you think! Thank you very much! :-)A:Hi Ron- I haven't tried the MD441 but in the last year or so I've discovered that Royer ribbon mic's are a great combo with a 57. As far as the Chinese Blue Bulldogs, I'm not sure if I have tried them. Lately I have been using a Studio Marshall 15 Watt. It's really versatile. Great crunchy rhythm tone and warm clean sound. I don't consider myself a real guitar solo kind of guy unless it's slide.
- Q:Hi Jeff! Question 1: I'd like to say that I really dig "No Substitute". What a wonderful song! Why don't you go on tour with SC as a support act? Would be a great push. :-) Question 2: Wouldn't it be a great idea to put all the unreleasd SC songs you Co-wrote (Chances Are, Dude, On The Outside, Just One Night, Murder In My Heart...) on iTunes? Question 3: Do you know what SC's engineers use for a microphone for steelstring guitar recording in the studio? A Small-diaphragm? An AKG 391B? What mic do you recommend? Thanks in advance! Ron :-)A:Thanks Ron, I'd love to go on tour but it costs a fortune. Plus, I really need to put out a new record. as far as releasing unreleased songs on itunes, who knows maybe that'll happen one day. Regarding steel string guitar recording, do you mean acoustic guitar, dobro? A lot depends on what kind of mic pre's, compressors as well as guitar. If you mean acoustic guitar I personally like API 550 mic pre with a blackface 1176 universal and a U-87, or C-12. AKG's Neumann's, Telefunken are all good. As far as Dobro I have very little experience with that. Sheryl doesn't use that instrument much if at all. I hope this helps you!

- Q:I see you are a friend of Cheryl Crowe's. I am a huge fan and a bc survivor of 2 years. I love her music and find her Wildflowers new CD very inspiring. Is there any way I could get a donated pair of tickets to her upcoming concert August 29th in Boston, MA.A:Hi Donna- I would think a "huge fan" of Sheryl Crow would know how to spell her name! Just ribbing you! Anyway, I can't help you on the ticket end of things because I don't tour with her anymore. Are these "donated pair of tickets" for a specific cause? You might try Sheryl's website and look for Gregg Dempsey who is the head of her official fan club. He might be able to help you.
Louis Gendron, Wilton, NH
- Q:Hi Jeff. I just heard one of the dada tunes you did called "A Friend of Pat Robertson's". Just incredible. Was wondering what you brought to that in terms of production. Also, are you doing more than an EP with them?A:Louis- Thanks for the nice comments. As far as what I brought to the production of these new Dada tracks, I first worked on the arrangements which is always the first step. The recordings I added subtle keyboard work that didn't get in the way of Dada's "trio sound". Also worked on making the vocals the focal point of each song and still have the interaction of their instruments. As far as doing more I think that looks highly possible. We had an excellent time and worked really well together, so I'd say there was a lot of love goin' 'round.
